Ordinary Heroes

The film is about the social movements of Hong Kong in the nineteen seventies and eighties. It follows four lives. One is an advocate. One is a sex worker. One is a social worker. One is a priest. Their paths cross in the protests. At the centre are the boat people of Yau Ma Tei. These families live on the water. By the end of the seventies their conditions had grown much worse. The government had never granted them any formal standing, and that is where the trouble begins. Both the families and the activists take to the streets, and the film draws on real events. Anthony Wong Chau-Sang plays Father Kam, with Loletta Lee and Lee Kang-sheng, in the hundred and twenty eight minute film, a Hong Kong production Ann Hui finished in 1999.
