What The Unholy Three Is About
Three people out of the sideshow, a ventriloquist, a strong man and a dwarf, leave performing behind and set up a steady swindle for stealing jewels. The ventriloquist, Professor Echo, disguises himself as an old woman, and the three work out of the back of a pet shop. Jack Conway’s MGM production is the sound remake of the 1925 silent; both come from Tod Robbins’s novel, and in both Lon Chaney plays Professor Echo and Harry Earles plays Tweedledee. This was Chaney’s only talking picture and his last; he died of throat cancer a month after it opened. Irving Thalberg produced, and it was released on 12 July 1930. Among the record’s keywords is a word that is no longer used.
