The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart

Hank Venture has disappeared and there is a nationwide search. His family is trying to find him. At the same time the Monarch is looking into his own past; a piece of information about who he is is missing, and when it is found everything will change. Dr Venture is occupied with his own business. The organisation called the Guild becomes involved and an old matter is reopened. The narrative tries to gather all the strands built over years and many characters return. Christopher McCulloch directs; he writes the series with Doc Hammer. James Urbaniak, Patrick Warburton and Michael Sinterniklaas are among the voices. The production closes the television series of the same name; the series ran seven seasons before it was cancelled and the story was left unfinished. The film was made for that reason; the studio commissioned a single long episode to end it. Its form is dense; decades of accumulated reference are compressed into an hour and a half. The series' humour rests on satirising superhero conventions and the film keeps that register. The narrative answers some questions but not all; the close was criticised for being incomplete. The animation and design follow the line of the later seasons. Its limit is independence; for anyone who does not know the series the narrative is entirely closed. Who it is for: followers of the series and viewers who like animated comedy for adults. Who it is not for: it is not an entry point, the references are dense, and the close does not satisfy.
