What The Virginian Is About

A good natured cowboy is courting the new schoolteacher who has come to town. At the same time he learns that his closest friend has fallen in with cattle rustlers, and that means choosing between friendship and the justice the town hands out itself. Adapted from Owen Wister’s 1902 novel and from the play that came out of it, this was the first sound version of the book; two silent ones had been made before. It is also the part that made Gary Cooper a star, and one line from the film was repeated for years. Walter Huston and Richard Arlen also appear in Victor Fleming’s ninety one minute American western, completed in 1929.
