The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium

Micah Bickham's 2023 concert film records The Weeknd's show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The staging rests on a conceit carried across the whole tour: the silhouette of a ruined city, a masked chorus and a figure moving through darkness. The film tries to go beyond delivering the songs in order and to make that design legible, with the camera passing over the crowd and returning to the structure on stage. The sound is mixed to studio cleanliness, which may count as a loss for anyone who wants the rawness of a live recording. The set list is drawn from the artist's known material and the show is built for a venue of fifty thousand. There is no talk and no backstage section. Who it's for: listeners of The Weeknd and anyone curious about the staging of stadium concerts. Who it's not for: viewers expecting documentary content; this is the concert from beginning to end.
