What The Whisperers Is About
Margaret Ross is old, poor and entirely alone. She lives in a crumbling flat in a northern industrial town, gets by on public assistance, and is certain there are voices behind the walls whispering about her. One day she finds stolen money her son has hidden in the flat and decides the inheritance she has always imagined has finally arrived. The point is that she is so busy with voices that are not there that she cannot see the real predators around her. Bryan Forbes made it in 1967 from Robert Nicolson's novel. Edith Evans, seventy-nine when she played it, won the BAFTA, the Golden Globe and the New York critics' award, and was nominated for the Oscar.
