The Raging Moon

Bruce Pritchard is injured in a football match, loses the use of both legs and is moved into a convalescent home. After a spell of anger and withdrawal he meets Jill there, and a relationship begins. Adapting Peter Marshall’s book, Bryan Forbes did something unusual for 1971: he showed two disabled people as adults with desire, and did not sanitise the relationship. Malcolm McDowell and Nanette Newman play them. The film took two Golden Globe nominations, one for best English-language foreign film and one for its song; in the United States it was retitled Long Ago, Tomorrow, after that same song. Forbes keeps the convalescent home ordinary rather than tragic, which is most of why the romance in it registers at all.
