What The White Disease Is About
In an unnamed country whose people have been persuaded by a dictator’s speeches of their own superiority and of the necessity of war, a deadly illness spreads; it is a form of leprosy with no cure that strikes people past the age of forty five. Only Galén, a physician of the poor, has found a remedy, but he refuses to give up its secret: he will supply no one until those in power stop killing people through war. When the disease reaches the marshal’s own circle, the two of them come face to face. Hugo Haas’s hundred and five minute Czechoslovak film was adapted from the play Karel Čapek wrote that same year and makes an open reference to the rising Nazi threat. The director himself plays Galén; it was completed in 1937.
