What They Were Eleven Is About
Candidates for the Cosmo Academy are put through a final exam: in teams of ten, survive more than fifty days on a derelict spacecraft. If anyone presses the emergency button during the test, they all fail. The team boards the ship and counts. There should be ten of them, and there are eleven. One of them is not supposed to be there. Tsuneo Tominaga's anime is adapted from Moto Hagio's manga. The tension comes not from violence but from mistrust: nobody can ask anybody a question, because asking is itself grounds for suspicion. The cast come from different planets and each has their own body and their own rules. The film is one of the calm, talk-driven examples of eighties science fiction anime.
