What Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie Is About
Barbie went on sale in 1959 and has been both the best-selling toy and the most argued-over toy ever since. The documentary tells two things together: the doll's sixty-year history, and how the decision to change its body proportions was taken inside Mattel. The company's own rooms are opened to the camera. Gloria Steinem speaks in Andrea Blaugrund Nevins's film. The story of Ruth Handler, who created Barbie, sits alongside the history of the feminist criticism. The film neither clears the doll nor blames it on its own; it shows the company's concern with sales and what the criticism gets right at the same time. It leaves plain that there is no easy answer to the question.
