What Underworld Beauty Is About
The moment he is out of prison, Miyamoto digs up the stolen diamonds he hid before he was picked up. He means to turn the stones into money and settle what he owes the friend who once took a bullet for him. But the boss Oyane, who is after the diamonds, gets in the way, and the business turns into a reckoning nobody will come out of well. One of Seijun Suzuki’s early films, it uses the moulds of noir and also enjoys playing with them. Mannequins, workshops and narrow streets build the look of the film. Michitaro Mizushima and Mari Shiraki appear in the eighty seven minute Japanese film, completed in 1958.
