What Varavelpu Is About
After seven years working in the Gulf, Murali comes back to his town in Kerala and decides to stay for good, building a life there with what he has saved. When he tries to run the bus he has bought, nothing goes the way he expected: the unions, local politics and everybody’s expectation of a share back him into a corner step by step. Sathyan Anthikad directed from a screenplay by Sreenivasan, shaping it as a black comedy aimed squarely at the union arrangements in Kerala. There is plenty to laugh at, but where the film arrives is not cheerful at all: the wall that goes up in front of someone who wants to come home. Mohanlal leads, with Revathi and Sreenivasan alongside, and it opened in April 1989.
