Vettam

Priyadarshan's 2004 Malayalam film follows Gopi, who drops a chain he has stolen into a woman's bag while escaping the police. He tries to get it back, cannot find it in the bag, and ends up drawn into Veena's own plan. The film is a comedy built on misunderstandings. Gopi has to keep explaining himself and every explanation complicates matters further; a crowded supporting ensemble enlarges the confusion. Priyadarshan made many films in this shape, and here too the pace is fast and the scenes short. Dileep leads. The narrative is not original and follows the familiar steps of the genre; the humour is largely physical. Who it's for: those who like 2000s Malayalam comedy. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a new plot; the film repeats a template the director had used before.
