What Wandering Ginza Butterfly Is About
Nami goes to prison for killing a yakuza. Three years later there is nowhere for her to return to, so she moves in with an uncle who runs a billiard hall and takes work at a hostess club behind the expensive windows of Ginza. When a rival gang moves on her uncle’s business, she answers first with a cue and then with a short sword. Kazuhiko Yamaguchi’s film, made for Toei, sits inside the seventies wave of yakuza pictures built around women, and its force comes from Meiko Kaji’s gaze, which never rises and never wavers. A sequel with Sonny Chiba followed the same year.
