What Waterboys Is About
A Dutch crime novelist and his cello playing son are dumped on the same day, the boy by his girlfriend and the father by the boy’s mother. After consoling each other briefly, the father takes his son along on a trip to Scotland where he is meant to promote his latest book, hoping the journey will rebuild a bond that has worn very thin. Robert Jan Westdijk’s ninety minute film is about fathers who need to grow up and sons who could stand to take life more lightly, and it keeps the comedy and the sadness in the same scene rather than separating them. Leopold Witte and Tim Linde lead, with Helen Belbin and Julie McLellan in support, and songs by the band The Waterboys carry the soundtrack of this British Dutch co-production.
