What We Have Never Been Modern Is About
1937, in a new factory town in the Spiš region of Slovakia, laid out on the model of Zlín. Helena, pregnant, and her husband, the factory manager, came here for a bright future, and that future comes apart when the body of a newborn intersex baby is found in the factory yard. Helena wants to know what happened, for her own child’s sake, and keeps running into her own prejudices. Matěj Chlupáček’s film is drawn from the real histories of intersex people in the thirties and takes its title from Bruno Latour’s book. It watches what people who arrived claiming modernity do the moment a body does not fit what they know.
