What What Lies Upstream Is About
In January 2014 a chemical called MCHM leaked into the Elk River in West Virginia and more than three hundred thousand people across nine counties lost their drinking water. The further Cullen Hoback follows it, the less the story is about one tank and the more it is about the whole regulatory system: state and federal agencies that do not function, and chemical companies effectively writing the laws meant to bind them. While he is filming, the water crisis breaks in Flint, Michigan, and the two events explain each other. Erin Brockovich is among those interviewed. It opened Slamdance in 2017 and aired on PBS the following year.
