When a Man Loves

Fabien des Grieux had chosen a life given to the church. He lives in eighteenth century France. On the road he meets a young woman. Her name is Manon Lescaut. Manon is on her way to a convent with her brother. That meeting changes everything. Fabien gives up the path he had chosen. The two of them want to be together. There is a great deal in their way. There are separations and losses. The film still ends with hope. They set out for America at the last. The story comes from the 1731 novel by Abbé Prévost. It is a silent film. Its music and sound effects were recorded with Vitaphone, and it was the third Warner Bros feature made that way. John Barrymore and Dolores Costello appear in the hundred and eleven minute film, an American production Alan Crosland finished in 1927.
