Cecil B. DeMille’s 1920 silent comedy is about a marriage coming apart and being reassembled. Beth has devoted herself to improving her husband’s mind, teaching him to appreciate classical music and finer things generally. He goes into a shop to buy her something more alluring to wear and meets Sally, who works there; an evening out and the perfume it leaves on him produce a divorce. Just as he tires of Sally’s shallowness, Beth sets about changing her own appearance, and the original couple meet again at a summer resort. It is among the best-known of DeMille’s marriage comedies, and Gloria Swanson’s stardom owed a great deal to the fashion in them.
