What With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story Is About
Stan Lee's name is on hundreds of millions of comic books. He had a hand in creating more than five hundred characters, among them Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk. The documentary starts his story in his Depression-era childhood: his first job at Timely Comics, the war years, the censorship campaign aimed at comics in the fifties, and the birth of Marvel. Terry Dougas, Nikki Frakes and Will Hess directed it together. The documentary rests on Lee's own account and his archive, using handwriting, drawings and photographs. Colleagues and fans talk. The tone is celebratory; it does not go into detail on the continuing arguments between Lee and the artists over who the creative contribution actually belonged to.
