What xxxHOLiC The Movie: A Midsummer Night's Dream Is About
Yuko, who keeps a shop where wishes are granted in exchange for a price, is invited to the mansion of a wealthy client. Arriving with Watanuki, who works for her, they find a group of collectors gathered and a mysterious auction being prepared. The guests start disappearing one by one. The house itself changes as the night goes on, and Yuko and Watanuki have to solve the matter before their own turn comes. The source is CLAMP's manga. At sixty minutes the film can also be watched as a way in to the series, since the whole thing happens in one night and does not tie an outside viewer to much backstory. The visual design keeps the long, thin figures and the use of empty space from the series. The horror is not explicit; the tension comes rather from the rules of the house and the promises made, and paying a price is always central in CLAMP's stories.
