What SHIROBAKO the Movie Is About
Four years after the events of the television series, Musashino Animation has been through a serious upheaval and the studio is in bad shape. Aoi Miyamori is offered the job of managing a new theatrical animation project, with only a few months to the deadline and no certainty that the studio as it now stands can finish it. The film carries on the line of a series that describes the animation industry from the inside: schedules, budgets, people disappearing from the team, decisions changed at the last minute, and a production manager trying to hold all of it together. Tsutomu Mizushima directed for P.A. Works, and it opened in February 2020. That the film itself was finished only three days before release is a coincidence that fits the work it describes rather too well.
