What Crayon Shin-chan: Fierceness That Invites Storm! The Kasukabe Boys of the Evening Sun Is About
Tsutomu Mizushima's 2004 Japanese animation is a feature drawn from a long-running series. Shin-chan and his friends are watching a film in a strange cinema when they are pulled into the screen and find themselves in the middle of a western. The rule is simple and unsettling: the longer they stay inside, the less they remember of the real world. The children begin taking on their parts, and whether they still want to return becomes uncertain. The series is known for comedy, but this entry is markedly darker. The narrative goes somewhere sad at the close and does not quite give the relief a young audience expects, which is why followers of the series hold it in a place of its own. Who it's for: those who watch the series and like unexpectedly heavy children's films. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the series; the film begins without introducing its characters.
