What Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions Is About

After Atem, the master of the card duel, has gone, Yugi and his friends try to return to ordinary life. Then Aigami appears with the power to move between dimensions, intent on stopping Kaiba's plan to bring Atem back. Kaiba is spending his fortune on it. The subject is not duelling but Kaiba being unable to accept a loss. He sends a craft into space to retrieve his opponent, and the reason is not longing but an unfinished match. The film shows the obsession as both ridiculous and tragic. The form is unusually ambitious for the series. The card play is visualised with three-dimensional techniques and the city is drawn in detail, well above the level of the television show. The most notable thing is the writing. Kazuki Takahashi, who created the manga, wrote the screenplay himself and took a direct part in the character designs; it is the only film in the series in which its creator was this involved. The narrative continues from where the show ended and cannot be followed without it. Kenjiro Tsuda voices Kaiba and Shunsuke Kazama voices Yugi. Who it is for: viewers who have finished the series and like card duels. Who it is not for: newcomers; the film introduces nothing and assumes you know the rules.
