What A Family Affair Is About

George B. Seitz’s 1937 MGM film was planned as a modest B picture and started the sixteen-film Hardy family series. Judge Hardy is under pressure at work and at home: the powerful men of the town want him removed for opposing a wasteful public works scheme, his daughters Joan and Marion have troubles of their own, and his son Andy has discovered Polly Benedict. Lionel Barrymore plays the judge and Mickey Rooney plays Andy. As the series went on the weight shifted onto Andy and both leads were recast, with Lewis Stone taking over as the judge. The source is a 1928 stage play by Aurania Rouverol.
