What Kind Lady Is About
Mary, a woman of good intentions, takes pity on Henry, an artist with nowhere to live. What starts as a simple gesture, bringing him in out of the cold for tea, grows steadily, and before she has understood what is happening Henry, his family and his friends have installed themselves in her house. He turns out to be a con man, and at a certain point it becomes a threat: cooperate or be killed. Mary sets up a ruse to get rid of them, and they have a plan of their own. Directed by George B. Seitz for MGM, it was adapted from Edward Chodorov’s 1935 play and from Hugh Walpole’s 1932 story The Silver Mask. It opened in December 1935. Aline MacMahon plays Mary and Basil Rathbone plays Henry.
