What A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery Is About
Andrés Bonifacio is honoured as the father of the Philippine revolution against Spanish colonial rule. This epic of more than eight hours looks closely at that myth, entering history through several narrative threads twisted around one another and holding them together with a single question: what is the part an individual plays in history. The search for Bonifacio’s body, the mark left by what José Rizal wrote and long walks through the forest all move forward in the same stretch of time. Lav Diaz’s four hundred and eighty five minute Philippine Singaporean co-production screened in competition at the Berlin Film Festival in 2016 and won the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize for opening new perspectives. Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz star.
