What Death in the Land of Encantos Is About
A Filipino poet returns to his village after years in Europe. Horrified to find the community buried under landslides, he wanders the countryside, making contact again with friends, lovers and family whose lives stand on the edge of ruin. The film runs nine hours and uses that length as a claim: grief and wreckage are shown without being shortened. The account builds no plot; conversations, walks and long takes follow one another. Catastrophe here is not a scene but a continuous ground. The account does not explain what the landslides left behind; it stays with it, and the length is what makes that possible. Roeder Camanag and Angeli Bayani appear in Lav Diaz’s five hundred and forty minute Filipino film, completed in 2015.
