What Batang West Side Is About
On a winter night in New Jersey, a Filipino teenager is found shot dead on West Side Avenue. Juan Mijares, the detective investigating, goes down into the world of young Filipinos in Jersey City and finds not so much a murder as the story of a community: what generations of migration have left behind, the ties that came loose, and the damage methamphetamine is doing among the young. Lav Diaz’s film, running more than five hours, was made from his own screenplay, which had won a Palanca award in 1997. It was named best picture at the Singapore International Film Festival, at the Brussels independent festival and at the Gawad Urian. Yul Servo, Joel Torre and Gloria Diaz star.
