Evolution of a Filipino Family

Lav Diaz's 2004 film, running over ten hours, is among the longest works of narrative cinema. Diaz shot it in intervals across roughly a decade. The story follows a poor farming family in the countryside under the Marcos regime between 1971 and 1987. The length is not a stunt but the method itself. Diaz does not cut away; work in a field, a walk, a wait all run close to real time. The aim is to show what martial law does to people through erosion rather than through events. The black-and-white image and the use of natural sound strengthen that effect. The film never entered normal distribution; it has been seen at festivals and special screenings, usually with breaks. It is cited as the work that redefined the limits of independent production in Philippine cinema. Who it's for: viewers prepared for slow cinema and for a long-form approach to political history. Who it's not for: nearly anyone watching films under ordinary conditions; the running time is a real obstacle and the film does nothing to soften it.
