What Storm Children Is About
The Philippines takes an average of twenty to twenty-eight strong typhoons and storms a year, more than any country on earth. In November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan hit Tacloban and left something close to apocalyptic destruction behind it. A few months later Lav Diaz went to the island and watched the children: three of them scavenging for food, playing among ships driven up onto the main street, diving off the hulls still sitting in the water. The film is in black and white, almost without dialogue, and runs close to two and a half hours. It builds no relief narrative and simply looks, at length, at how life goes on after.
