What When the Waves Are Gone Is About
Hermes Papauran is one of the leading investigators in the Philippines. He witnesses the drug operations his own force is carrying out. People are being killed in those operations. He keeps what he sees to himself. His body will not carry it. A severe skin disease appears. Doctors tell him it is bound up with anxiety and guilt. Papauran goes away for treatment. The healing does not come easily either. Something out of his past comes after him. It turns into a moral crossroads. The film moves long and slow. Lav Diaz does not hurry the telling.
