What A Tale of Two Cities Is About

In the years leading to the French Revolution, the French doctor Alexandre Manette serves eighteen years in the Bastille and, on his release, goes to London to the daughter he has never met. At the real centre of the story is Sydney Carton, an alcoholic English lawyer who learns that Charles Darnay, a man he once defended, is a French aristocrat escaping the Revolution. Both are in love with the same woman, Lucie Manette, but in the end Carton’s conscience gets ahead of his envy. Ralph Thomas adapted Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel and the result counts among the more faithful versions of it. The black and white photography moves between a sedate London and a boiling Paris. Dirk Bogarde plays Carton and Dorothy Tutin plays Lucie, in a Rank Organisation production.
