What Conspiracy of Hearts Is About
Italy, 1943. The nuns of a convent are smuggling Jewish children out of a nearby internment camp and hiding them. The Italian officer running the camp suspects what is going on and deliberately looks away; when the Germans take over security, the whole thing becomes a different order of danger. Ralph Thomas’s film, drawn from real events, shows heroism not through speeches but through an everyday stubbornness: one more child, and then one more. Lilli Palmer leads, with Sylvia Syms and Yvonne Mitchell beside her. It was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1961 in the category for films promoting international understanding.
