What Above Us the Waves Is About
In the Second World War the greatest single problem facing the Royal Navy is the German battleship Tirpitz, anchored deep in a Norwegian fjord where nothing conventional can reach her. So a handful of volunteers set out to go in with midget submarines and place charges under the hull. The film draws on two separate real operations, both of them fought in a narrow, freezing, pitch dark space. Ralph Thomas keeps the speeches out and concentrates on the mechanics of the job, and John Mills carries that quietly. What the raid achieved is still argued over: Tirpitz was badly damaged, but the Germans got her repaired. The technical adviser was the officer who had commanded one of the real submarines and received the Victoria Cross for it.
