What A Trap Is About

Kiriko’s elder brother, her only relative, is accused of robbing and killing an old moneylender. The young woman travels from Kyushu to Tokyo and asks the country’s leading lawyer to defend him. But the lawyer will not take the case because she has not enough money, and her good faith breaks there. What follows is a long and determined reckoning; to punish the man Kiriko builds her life again from the start, and she pays for it herself as well. A second killing and a reporter on its trail also enter the account. Chieko Baisho plays the lead in Yoji Yamada’s hundred and eleven minute Japanese film, completed in 1965.
