What Across the Bridge Is About
Ken Annakin's 1957 British film is adapted from a 1938 short story by Graham Greene. Carl Schaffner, a businessman who has embezzled his company's money, boards a train to escape into Mexico with the police behind him, and on the way he drugs a man and takes his identity and his passport. But the owner of that identity turns out to be a fugitive criminal too, and Schaffner finds himself inside a worse trap. The man Rod Steiger plays never tries to be sympathetic, and the film does not forgive him. The Mexican scenes were shot in Spain. A dog occupies the least expected place in the story.
