What Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes Is About

A fictional air race from London to Paris in 1910 and the multinational crowd of pilots who enter it. Ken Annakin's film runs entirely on national jokes: the English gentleman, the French womaniser, the German officer, the Italian count and the American cowboy. Most of the humour is crude and schematic by present standards. What holds it up are the aeroplanes. Annakin refused miniatures from the start and insisted on flyable replicas of 1910-era aircraft. Air Commodore Wheeler pressed for authentic original materials, with modern engines fitted for safety. Non-flying models and some original machines also appear; several of the flying replicas are still airborne today. The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Who it is for: viewers who like aviation history and large-scale sixties comedy productions. Who it is not for: anyone who will find a running time past two hours and repeating national gags tiring.
