Third Man on the Mountain

In a small mountain village in Switzerland, Rudi Matt works as a dishwasher. His father died fifteen years earlier climbing the Citadel, a peak nobody has reached. A famous British climber comes to the village wanting to go up it, but no guide will go with him. Rudi attaches himself to the attempt. The party on the mountain grows to four men. Ken Annakin directed this Disney production from James Ramsey Ullman's novel, and the Citadel is openly based on the Matterhorn. It was shot in Switzerland on the real mountain. James MacArthur plays Rudi, Michael Rennie the climber and Herbert Lom the rival guide. The film has a well known side story: Walt Disney saw the Matterhorn during the shoot, and the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland came out of that idea.
