Anna Christie

A young woman is reunited with the father she has not seen since early childhood. He lives on a barge and finds his daughter in front of him after years. In the same stretch she meets a sailor, and he wants to marry her. But there is a part of her past she has told neither of the two men. In the end she has to tell them both. The film builds that admission not as a punishment but as a threshold. The work is the German language version of the same film. Shooting one story in two languages was a common method in Hollywood at the start of the thirties. The eighty five minutes are compressed into a few days. Greta Garbo and Theo Shall appear in Jacques Feyder’s American film, completed in 1930.
