What Carnival in Flanders Is About
Flanders, 1616. The town of Boom is preparing its annual fair when word arrives that a Spanish duke and his retinue will be staying the night. The men panic; some propose playing dead, some propose running. The women choose another route. Led by the burgomaster's wife, they entertain the Spaniards so well that the town escapes both the looting and the taxes. Jacques Feyder's film won best director at Venice. In Belgium it caused an uproar: some were angry at the mockery of Flemish notables, others at what they saw as praise for getting along with an occupier. The same film was banned by the Nazis in 1939.
