Anzhela Ptashuk What Assassin of the Tsar Is About
Karen Shakhnazarov's 1991 Soviet-British co-production is set in a mental hospital in the eighties. Timofeyev, the patient played by Malcolm McDowell, says he killed both Tsar Alexander II in 1881 and his grandson Nicholas II in 1918. The chief doctor, Smirnov, tries an unusual method on him: acting out the scene the patient describes, with the doctor himself taking the part of the tsar. As the roleplay goes on it stops being clear who is treating whom, and the film moves into that night in 1918, when a family was killed without any trial. McDowell and Oleg Yankovsky carry it between them. It competed at Cannes in 1991.
