What Winter Evening in Gagry Is About
A young man wants to learn tap, but only one person is left who knows the craft: Beglov. In the 1950s Beglov was the star of that dance; when the fashion passed he lost everything, and now he works an ordinary job at a studio. He does not even want to hear the word. The young man will not let him go all the same. Karen Shakhnazarov's Soviet film carries comedy and sadness at the same time. Yevgeny Yevstigneyev plays Beglov and carries the weight of the part. The telling does not settle for missing the old days; it asks what is left of a person once the work is taken away. The dance scenes are the liveliest passages, while the tone overall stays calm.
