Evgeniy Evstigneev What We're from Jazz Is About
In the Odessa of the 1920s a music student named Kostya is thrown out of his college for playing jazz. In those years jazz counted in the Soviet Union as the music of capitalism. Kostya finds two musicians playing on the street and puts a small band together. They go from city to city looking for work. Nobody wants them, they cannot get a stage, but they do not give up. Karen Shakhnazarov's film became one of the most talked about Soviet productions of 1983 and was shown abroad as well. Mark Minkov wrote the music and Anatoli Kroll conducted. Igor Sklyar plays Kostya. The telling does not sit in judgement on the period; it gives a prohibition as comedy: young people want to play music, the system will not allow it, and they play anyway.
