What Athos Is About
The Athos peninsula in Greece is one of the most closed places in Europe. More than two thousand monks live there with their ties to the outside world cut; women are not allowed in, tourists are not welcome, and only workers and pilgrims can obtain a visa for the peninsula. The documentary moves in the form of a diary in the company of three monks and shows the life of the place through their daily work. At one end of the account is a hermit living alone on the mountain, at the other a cook who seats his guests at his table; both live in the same place but not in the same way. Peter Bardehle and Andreas Martin’s ninety nine minute documentary was completed in 2016.
