What Au Bonheur des Dames Is About
Orphaned, Denise comes to Paris looking for work at her uncle's little shop. But the vast department store that has opened across the street is destroying every small trader around it, and her uncle's shop is next. Denise ends up taking a job inside the store, caught between the place employing her and the lives it is ruining. Julien Duvivier adapted Émile Zola's novel and made one of the last French silent films in the process. He treats the store not as scenery but as a working machine: lifts, window displays, counters, crowds. It is about the birth of modern consumption and the disappearance of the small shopkeeper at the same time, and it is startlingly current.
