What Born to Dance Is About
The sailor Ted comes ashore on leave and meets a young woman who wants to be a dancer on Broadway. Something starts between them. But at the same time a well known Broadway star has taken an interest in the sailor, and the papers make the most of it. The young woman is pushed aside. One evening on stage, everything could still change. Roy Del Ruth's musical is among the first Cole Porter wrote directly for the screen. "I've Got You Under My Skin" was sung for the first time in this film and was nominated for the best song Oscar. It was Eleanor Powell's first starring role, and her tap dancing is the real show. James Stewart plays the sailor before he became a star, and even sings.
