Taxi!

In New York the independent cab drivers are under pressure from a big company. The company wants the streets to itself, smashes the cars of those who resist, and sends men after them. Matt Nolan is an angry, scrappy driver and leads the ones trying to stand against it. At the same time he meets a woman called Sue and they marry. She wants him to give up the fight; Matt does not. James Cagney plays Matt, and the film is one of his works from just after The Public Enemy. In the opening scene he speaks Yiddish with a passenger; Cagney had picked the language up growing up in New York. Loretta Young plays Sue. Roy Del Ruth directed. The film was made before the Hays Code was strictly enforced and shows both the violence and the strain in the marriage directly. Sixty-nine minutes.
