What The Little Giant Is About
Prohibition is ending, so the Chicago bootlegger Bugs Ahearn decides to get out and break into polite society. He moves to California with what he has put aside, leases a house from Ruth, who has come down in the world, and hires her to run his social affairs. Rescuing Polly Cass from a fall off a horse, he meets her father, who sells him a pile of worthless stock certificates. When he works out that he has been swindled, he sends to Chicago for his old friends. Roy Del Ruth directed, and this was Warner Bros’ first attempt to turn Edward G. Robinson’s gangster persona into comedy, made only two years after Little Caesar. It carries the ease of the pre-Code years, with Mary Astor opposite Robinson.
