What Broadway Melody of 1938 Is About
Steve Raleigh wants to put on a show on Broadway. He finds his backer, Herman Whipple, and his leading lady, Sally Lee. But Whipple’s wife Caroline insists on a known star rather than a newcomer. Sally, meanwhile, buys a horse she used to train on her parents’ farm before the depression and, with two former vaudevillians, gets it ready to race; if the horse wins, the money for the show is there. The film runs the numbers on stage and the horse race inside the same story, and puts the dancing forward. Eleanor Powell and Robert Taylor appear in Roy Del Ruth’s hundred and ten minute film, completed in 1937.
